As Your Shape Changes - Booklet

By Dianne Edmonds

Are you pregnant or have you recently had a baby?
Do you want to know how to take care of your body as your baby grows?
Do you need a little help knowing where to start?
If you answered YES to any of these questions, this booklet is specially for you.

It will help you to:

  • Know your pelvic floor better
  • Keep your abdominals toned while being safe for your baby
  • Find out what an abdominal muscle separation is
  • Know if you have a gap between your abdominal muscles as your baby grows
  • Know how to measure the gap and other changes in your body as your baby grows
  • Get back into shape after the birth of your baby
  • Know when to see further help from your health or fitness professional

You will be able to chart your progress and keep a track of what is 'normal' for you during pregnancy and this will give you the edge in getting back into shape post birth.

Find out how to work your pelvic floor and your core safely for you and for your baby.

This booklet covers some basic checks on returning to running and sport safely after the birth, that you can use in conjunction with your women's and pelvic health physiotherapist to reduce the risk of developing unwanted problems such as urine leakage, pelvic organ prolapse or heaviness in your pelvic floor area.

The booklet is designed for you to use yourself, or with your health or fitness professional, including even taking it on to maternity ward or your birthing suite, for your midwife or physiotherapist to record how large your abdominal gap is after the birth.

Your body can change from one pregnancy to another so if you are planning more than one pregnancy, this booklet includes an extra set of charts. This way you can look back and compare your pelvic floor details to the records you make this time.
